Phenol Free Rolls (Not to be confused with UK standard BPA free Till rolls (We sell both types!).

BPA (Bisphenol A) - Due to health concerns, the European Union introduced new legislation in 02/01/2020 preventing the use of the Phenol chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) in the production of thermal till rolls. Since then it has been illegal for European manufacturers to produce Thermal Till Rolls with a concentration of BPA equal to or above 0.02%. Unfortunately with it not being a worldwide ban, there are still several countries where the use of BPA (a relatively low cost chemical) is not yet restricted and as a result, some countries still use it to produce their thermal till rolls. Unsurprisingly in todays world, those till rolls still find their way into the UK market (beware!), often sold by non-specialist till roll sellers via well known online shopping platforms. 

All of Trade Till Rolls paper is EU compliant BPA free as a minimum standard.

What does BPA actually do - when mixed with proto-dye and heated by the print head in your device, it results in the dark print colour being produced on a receipt.

BPS (Bisphenol S) - As a result of the ban on BPA, most thermal rolls produced in Europe are currently manufactured using an alternative, more expensive Phenol chemical called Bisphenol S (BPS). BPS is a direct replacement for BPA and is therefore also used to create the reaction required to produce the dark print which we find on most of todays receipts. However, whilst the use of Bisphenol S in the production of till rolls is the industry standard within the EU, there are a growing number of health concerns surrounding regularly handling any Phenol based products and countries such as Switzerland have already gone one step further that the UK, also banning the use of BPS in production of their thermal rolls. Contrary to popular belief, Till Rolls containing either BPS or BPA are not suitable for standard recycling.

Phenol Free Rolls - Trade Till Rolls supply a simplified range of entirely Phenol Free thermal rolls in the 3 most popular sizes. Phenol free rolls are suitable for everyday use, but if  you run a busy restaurant, handle food products regularly, or want to ensure optimum staff welfare, we always recommend phenol free as the best option.
